Citrix 4.5 CPU Utilization mgmt / CPU rebalancer doesn’t automatically start
| Gilbert Florescu | I cannot get the CPU Utilization mgmt / CPU Rebalancer service to start automatically. I’ve tried using a Local System account, a domain admin account and nothing. The default was set to use the .\ctx_cpsvcuser.
Once I login to the server I can start it manually just fine. In the Event viewer I get: Cannot validate license status. Event # 8457. |
| James Saunders | Have you enabled CPU utilization management on the farm or server? By default this is disabled and the services set to manual. |
| Gilbert Florescu | Yes, I have enabled it at the farm level. I set the startup type as Automatic.
It’s still not working. |
| James Saunders | Which edition are you running? As this is only available in platinum or enterprise editions. |
| Gilbert Florescu | Platinum |
| James Saunders | Have you more than one server in the farm, and if so does it affect all servers or just one?
The services should be set to manual even if enabled on the farm. They should be then started by the IMA service. If you attempt to start them before the IMA service has started then a license won’t have been obtained. Set them back to manual and double check that both on the farm and CPU management is enabled and then on the server its set to use the farm settings. Restart the server and see if it starts the services for you. |
| James Saunders | Also at this point do you get any event log errors relating to the services?
Do any CPU management services start? Are there any events in the security log? |
| Gilbert Florescu | I did set it to manual, that’s the default setting but it doesn’t seem to start ever. The farm settings are enabled for CPU management.
The only service that starts is the CPU mgmt/Resoruce mgmt. But the CPU Rebalancer service doesn’t start. Yes, there are event errors, like the one I mentioned in my original post. After setting it to manual, I don’t see that event id any more but the service doesn’t start. |
| James Saunders | If Citrix CPU Utilization Mgmt/Resource Mgmt is starting at this point then the cpu management is functioning correctly.
I take it that the server is dual processor? If you leave all other services at manual and then set the rebalancer to automatic if it doesn’t start in the event log is there an error in the event log something like: |
| Gilbert Florescu | If I set the rebalancer to Automatic, then I get the licensing error message.
But I can start this process manually by clicking on Start in Services. |
| James Saunders | It might be worth just contacting citrix support to check your licenses. Licensing support is usually free.
It’s not something strange like the service is trying to start before the networking has come up? If you set the service to restart on failure does it then start automatically eventually? |
| Gilbert Florescu | I tried to set “restart on failure” and the same thing. I may give Citrix a call to find out what’s going on. |
