Citrix 4.5 Setup print server in a remote site WAN

D P Hi.

I have a local print server within the same subnet as our citrix servers in our corporate IT office.

I want to setup a remote print server for our other site (e.g. newyork site).

I setup a print server there and shared them, then added this server as ‘newyorkserver’ in my citrix presentation server console’s Printer Management.

1. It takes a long time for the printers to be displayed for newyork users when using their own print server.
2. Sometimes if I add or modify some printers in the newyorkserver, I can’t update/refresh it in citrix’s ‘Network Print Servers’ tab because it says ‘failed to refresh network print server data for server’…error code: 0130006/c0130003.

Notes:
I have ps4, windows 2003 citrix servers. the newyork print server is win 2003 std sp2.
I don’t have a domain controller in our newyork office hence their print server is just part of their own workgroup.

Any ideas? Thank you so much.

D P Hi there Christoph

Thank you for your response.

1. In our corporate IT office, we have our DCs there. We don’t have any DCs in our other sites. All sites come through our VPN.
2. No autocreated printers, only session printers.

e.g. example scenario:
In the newyorkprint server, I have few printers listed and these printers have IP addresses. I create local users that match the domain’s username/password so they can access these printers in citrix. I update the network print server (if i don’t get that errormessage in my previous post) and add those printers in the session printers section.

The users state that the printers takes a few minutes to show up and it just takes a few more seconds to print.
It was faster for the newyork users to use our own print server in my corporate office, but I wanted to deploy print servers throughout each site.

Looking forward to your suggestions. Cheers.

Christoph Wegener Hi,

I really don’t get the point in having a remote site without a domain controller but with local print servers …. why not deploy a domain controller to the remote site? you could even run print server and domain controller on the same hardware. either on the same OS instance or using a hypervisor and have to virtual OS instances.
And having to maintain local user accounts on the remote print server generates a lot of work for you! How do you synchronize the passwords? Manually?

Regarding your questions:
- of course connecting to the shared printers from your citrix server over the VPN to your remote site’s print server will take longer than doing the same thing in a LAN. (depending on the speed of your VPN connection)
- The “Always connect indirectly as a client printer” option relates only to Auto-Created Client Printers, not Session Printers

Also, what is your overall goal of this exercise? What problems do try to address by deploying print servers in the remote sites?

Regards,

Christoph Wegener

D P I meant increase the speed of printing over wan. Sorry.

D P Hi Christoph

Yes that is correct.

More info: Most of our printers are Ricoh 3025 or 2025.

Thank you.

D P We’re actually using Canon ir330-400 PCL drivers for our Ricoh printers in our printserver.

D P It’s supported by Ricoh. I think the canon driver was recommended by an outside resource so we tried it. It’s worked for us so far.

Thank you.

D P Canon drivers are installed on all headquarters citrix servers but only drivers are installed. All users are using the headquarter’s print server to print and it’s going well. The canon drivers are installed on newyork printserver.
On the local user’s desktop, I think it’s a combination of Ricoh 3025 xp drivers or Canon drivers.

Version: Canon PCL5e on my print server and citrix server.

Thank you.
